More frequent, long-term droughts around the world are no surprise under the climate changes thus far, but it is concerning that many of the water shortages in urban environments are unnecessary. Better infrastructure, political action, and improved technologies can provide water for everyone, up to nine billion people globally under the water table capacity at present. It just isn’t happening.

Underground freshwater sources are being systematically drained (after thousands of years taken to accumulate) and even if individuals who have access to water decrease their consumption, the crisis will not be abated without proper measures in place to protect sources from drainage and disease.

Additionally, most freshwater use across the world is in food production, industrial processes, and energy production. Water is being used as a bargaining chip, and a weapon, in regional conflicts, like Yemen. The shortage of clean, disease-free drinking water also tends to spark wars as everyone suddenly realizes how closely fresh water is linked to a long and happy life.

Why aren’t governments doing more? Perhaps, they are unable to feel the urgency of the 4.5 billion people this affects from inside their hot showers, running toilet facilities, and airconditioned offices.
